Application process

How do I apply to the English Language Program (ELP) at VCU?

International students applying to the program for full-time study (on an F-1 student visa) are required to submit the following:
• Completed and signed ELP application form [PDF], downloadable from this site in PDF format.
• U.S. $150 application and test fee.
• Official bank letter/financial statement that shows proof of sufficient funds to cover the cost of classes, fees and living expenses in the U.S. for the length of time the student intends to study.
• Proof of high school completion (transcripts or diploma) and, if applicable, university coursework or degree(s).
• Students requesting an I-20 form should not fax or e-mail their documentation. All documents must be original.

All other applicants to the program should contact the office for specifics regarding the application requirements relevant to their status.

After the completed application, fee and documentation are submitted to the ELP office, the application will be given to the admissions office. The admissions office will review the application and documents and make a decision on the applicant’s acceptance to the ELP. The office may request more information before making a decision. If no more information is needed, the ELP is usually able to inform students of a decision two weeks after submission of all application materials.

How will I know the application result?

A notification letter will be sent from the ELP office with an application decision. Letters to accepted students will include an ELP placement test date. The letter also will provide the details of when and where the test will be held and what documents, information and forms should be brought to the test.

If the applicant applied to study in F-1 status and was accepted, he/she will receive:
• The Form I-20.
• ELP placement test information.
• Housing information.
• Meal information.
• Airport arrival information and pick-up request form.

Please direct application questions to Heather Strobel at strobelha@vcu.edu. E-mails will generally be responded to within two business days.
