Commitment to privacy
Virginia Commonwealth University is strongly committed to maintaining the privacy of those individuals who share confidential personal information and other highly sensitive information with us. Further, VCU collects confidential personal information only to the extent necessary.
Official university sites: Except as noted, the information in this privacy notice applies to all official VCU websites, which are defined as the Web pages of university colleges, schools, departments, divisions or other units hosted by the university.
Unofficial websites: Linked to official VCU sites, you may find websites over which the university has no editorial responsibility or control over privacy practices. Such sites are considered unofficial and include, but are not limited to, the Web pages of individual faculty members or students and the Web pages of student organizations and other entities not formally a part of the university.
What is collected and how it is used
This VCU website does not require users to supply any personal information in order to view the website or download publicly available files. When you access VCU websites, the following nonpersonal information is automatically collected. No other information is collected through our official websites except “optional information” sent to us by email or online forms.
Automatically collected access information:
- Your IP address
- Date and time
- Pages visited
- Type of browser used
- Referring Web page, if present
- Personal data: When you send us an email we may collect your email address, your name and the content of your email.
- Form data: When you complete online forms, we collect all the data you choose to fill in or confirm, including user account information if you are setting up or using an account, credit or debit card information if you are ordering a product or making a payment, as well as information about other people if you are ordering a gift and want it sent directly to the recipient's address.
A cookie is a small amount of data that is sent to your browser from a Web server and stored on the device you used to access the website. The cookie is then sent back to the server each time the browser requests a page from the server. The primary purpose of cookies is to identify users in order to prepare customized Web pages for them.
The VCU website uses two kinds of cookies: nonpersistent and persistent. Some VCU Web pages use nonpersistent cookies for the purposes of fulfilling form requests. These cookies are discarded as soon as you close your Web browser. A small number of VCU Web pages use persistent cookies in order to provide improved service. Any VCU Web page that uses persistent cookies will include a statement as to the purpose for using persistent cookies, exactly what is being retained and how that information is being used.
The way we use information
We may use non-identifying and aggregate information to better design our website. For example, we may report the number of individuals who visited a certain area on our website, but we would not disclose anything that could be used to identify those individuals.
We may keep client information from our systems indefinitely after the Web page is transmitted, but we do not try to obtain any information to link it to the individuals who browse our website. However, on rare occasions when a “hacker” attempts to breach computer security, logs of access information are retained to permit a security investigation and in such cases may be forwarded together with any other relevant information in our possession to law enforcement agencies.
We use the information you provide about yourself when placing an order or request only to complete that order or request. We do not share this information with outside parties except to the extent necessary to complete that order or request. Similarly, we use the information you provide about someone else when placing an order or request only to complete that order or request. Again, we do not share this information with outside parties except to the extent necessary to complete that order or request.
We generally use return email addresses only to answer the email we receive. Such addresses are generally not used for any other purpose and by university and state policy are not shared with outside parties.
Finally, we never use or share the personally identifiable information provided to us online in ways unrelated to the ones described above without clear notice and the opportunity to opt-out or otherwise prohibit such uses.
Links to external websites
This site may contain links to external (non-VCU) websites. VCU is not responsible for the privacy practices or content of such websites.
Providing information is your choice
There is no legal requirement for you to provide any information at our website. However, our website will not work without routing information and the essential technical information. Failure of your browser to provide nonessential technical information will not prevent your use of our website but may prevent certain features from working. For any optional information that is requested at the website, failure to provide the requested information will mean that the particular feature or service associated with that part of the Web page may not be available to you.
Our commitment to information security
To prevent unauthorized access, maintain information accuracy and ensure the correct use of information, we have put in place appropriate physical, electronic and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online, consistent with the policies of the university and with the laws and regulations of the commonwealth of Virginia.
If you have additional questions or concerns about our privacy policies, please email the VCU Webmaster at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you wish to review or change information gathered about you via an official VCU website, you may contact the VCU Webmaster, who will assist you in locating the person responsible for that site so that you may make your request for the review or change directly with that person.
