Resident training - Introduction

The residency program in Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery of Virginia Commonwealth University provides comprehensive training in the medical and surgical care of patients with diseases affecting the ears, upper respiratory and aerodigestive tracts, and related structures of the head and neck. We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our graduates who have gone on to subspecialty fellowship training, academic careers, or thriving clinical practices. All of our graduates have passed the Certification Examination of the American Board of Otolaryngology. To accomplish our educational goals, the program provides structured clinical experience in the operating room, inpatient, and outpatient settings, didactic instruction, and research training to cover the entire scope of the specialty of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. The program is five years long including the structured PGY-1 year (see Program Overview). There are two positions available per year, filled through the National Resident Matching Program (see Application and Interview Process).

The program is centered at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center (VCUMC) in downtown Richmond. This is a busy level I trauma center with over 700 beds, 30 operating rooms between the main and ambulatory operating rooms, and over 80,000 emergency visits per year. The Department of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery outpatient clinic is located in the Nelson Clinic building, while the Head and Neck Tumor Clinic is located in the Massey Cancer Center (link to head and neck oncology site). The Department also has satellite outpatient facilities at the Stony Point Specialty Surgical Center located about ten miles west of VCUMC, and in Colonial Heights, Virginia about 15 miles south of VCUMC.

Each resident spends twelve months of their training at the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veteran's Administration Medical Center (HHMMC), located less than 10 miles south of VCUMC. This time is split between the PGY-2, 3, and 5 years. The HHMMC has over 400 acute care beds, and is a tertiary care referral center for oncology, open-heart surgery, spinal cord injury, and heart, lung, and liver transplantation for the Mid-Atlantic region. The Division of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery at HHMMC has a fully equipped outpatient clinic, and state of the art operating room facilities for both in-and out patient surgery.
