Primeros Pasos

Primeros Pasos, or First Steps, is a one-day program designed to provide Latinx high school students and their families with an overview of the college experience and opportunities in higher education. Virginia Commonwealth University students, parents, administrators, faculty and alumni will be available throughout the day to welcome you and share their experiences. Check-in begins at the University Student Commons at 9 a.m. The day’s activities will begin with welcoming remarks at 9:45 a.m.

The day will feature interactive sessions for both students and parents. Activities include:

  • Bilingual workshop for parents about financial aid
  • Panel discussion with students from VCU’s Latino community
  • Demystifying college admissions process workshop
  • Conversations with representatives from the Office of Admissions
  • A campus tour and lunch on campus

There is no cost for students or parents who participate in Primeros Pasos.

Cannot attend?

If you are unable to join us for Primeros Pasos and you want to visit another time, you may attend an Office of Admissions information session hosted Monday through Friday at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m., except on holidays and holiday weekends. Information sessions are also conducted in Spanish monthly. Each session is followed by a campus walking tour.

Primeros Pasos is held in collaboration with the VCU Office of Admissions, the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc., the Latinx Student Association, La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity Inc., Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority Inc, Muevelo, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Undocurams and VCU Latino Alumni Council.
