CWS5501: Substance Abuse - Online
This self-paced, interactive, online course offers and introduction to substance abuse and its impact on families. The emphasis is on assessment and treatment considerations within the context of collaboration. The course explores national trends related to the prevalence, causes and treatment of substance abuse, as well as drug categories, drug schedules and drug effects. The course asl reviews specific issues related to women and substance abuse, such as the barriers women face when attempting to gain treatment. The goal is to make family services workers aware of substance abuse assessment, treatment and stages of recovery, as well as techniques to encourage change.

Topics include:

  • Understanding the historical context of substance abuse as well as national and state trends
  • Results of recent research influencing referral and treatment
  • Biopsychosocial causative nature of addiction
  • Drug categories and schedules, possible effects and symptoms of overdose
  • Barriers facing women substance abusers as they attempt to access services
  • The need for incorporation of alchol and other drug assessment factors into an initial assessment for services
  • Recognizing the importance of enhancing client motivation during the treatment and recovery process
  • Understand the need for collaborative and innovative targeting the needs of substance-abusing clients
  • The cycle of recovery
