The Victorians Institute and VIJ

Welcome to the home page for the Victorians Institute, an organization of scholars and students centered in the Mid-Atlantic Region of the USA. We sponsor an annual meeting, which features papers by speakers from around the world, as well as the Victorians Institute Journal, an award-winning annual that publishes articles, reviews, and newly edited texts of interest to Victorianists.     Membership is open to anyone interested in Victorian literature, history, and culture. Dues of $20 are payable to "Victorians Institute":

    Victorians Institute Journal

    The Victorians Institute Journal, an annual publication of studies in Victorian literature, art, and culture, is produced under the auspice of the Department of English at Virginia Commonwealth University. VIJ began publishing in 1972, under the editorship of Conrad Festa. It was for many years edited by Donald Lawler at East Carolina University, and from 1994-1999 was edited by Beverly Taylor (UNC-Chapel Hill) and Mary Ellis Gibson (UNC-Greensboro).

    Subscriptions:
    Subscriptions are included in the membership; subscriptions from libraries and institutions are $20 per year. From foreign addresses add postage of $5.00. Orders for back issues are $12 ppd. For U.S. addresses, $16 for institutions; add $5.00 postage for foreign addresses. Institutional and foreign subscriptions, orders for back issues, reprint permission requests, queries about advertising, and other business communications should be addressed to the Victorians Institute Journal, Department of English, Box 842005, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA 23284-2005.     Texts

    In 1986, the journal began an innovative "Texts" section, which presented previously unpublished works from the Victorian era, starting with a short story by George Meredith.
