School by School: Improving Outcomes for All Students

Overview
The School By School (SBS) initiative is a U. S. Department of Education Model Demonstration Project in Research and Innovation to improve outcomes for students, including students with disabilities, within the context of whole school reform. The initiative is a partnership between Roanoke County Schools and the Virginia Institute for Developmental Disabilities. The partnership seeks to develop a model process that will assist schools in improving components of their school programs in order to build their capacity to meet the learning needs of all of their students with the full range of abilities and needs. An SBS Design Team of parents and professionals design steps of the model process, based on current educational practice and research. The model is being implemented in three Roanoke County Schools. Ongoing evaluation shapes the model development for eventual dissemination throughout Virginia and the nation.

Major Activities

  • Work with a Design Team of parents and professionals to develop a model process for schools to use in implementing school wide reform for improving outcomes for all students
  • Work with three schools (elementary, middle, high) within Roanoke County Schools to implement the SBS process
  • Design and implement a comprehensive, integrated evaluation plan to guide the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the SBS model process
  • Disseminate the model process, materials, and research findings
