Educating Health Professionals about the Maltreatment of Individuals with Disabilities : A National Developmental Disability Training Consortium

Overview
In collaboration with seven University Centers for Excellence (UCEs) and five Protection and Advocacy (P&As) Agencies across the nation, this project of national significance addresses deficits in the knowledge and skills of health professionals in responding to the maltreatment of individuals with disabilities. This three-year project is developing, field-testing, and disseminating state-of-the-art distance education materials (funded by the Association on Developmental Disabilities and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) to help prevent, identify, and report abuse and neglect of persons with disabilities.

Major Activities

  • Develop a comprehensive web-based course on maltreatment and disabilities suitable for varied health professional audiences
  • Form a national developmental disability consortium among UCEs and P&A agencies
  • Field-test course content and delivery
  • Enhance sustainability and applicability of content by disseminating among selected national audiences
