Calculate How Many People with Disabilities Are in Your Community
Date: December 10, 2001
Go to http://factfinder.census.gov
Under "Items of Interest", select the link on the right of your screen titled "Census 2000 Supplementary Survey".
Under "For quick access to results...", select "Profile of Selected Social Characteristics" and scroll down near the bottom of the page to select Your " STATE" from the drop down menu. Click "Go".
You are now in the "Quick Tables" section, where you can scroll down to "Disability Status of the Civilian Noninstitutionalized Population" and collect numbers for your state as follows:
1. Add the numbers from the "Estimate" column to obtain the total
population figures for your state as listed under these headings:
Population 5-20 years - record the "Estimate" number shown in the first box
Population 21-64 years - record the "Estimate" number shown in the first box
Population 65 years and over - record the "Estimate" number shown in the first box
2. Now, look at the row below each of the above headings, "With a disability". Add the "Estimate" numbers for each age category to obtain the total people with disabilities in your state.
3. Divide the total population into the total for people with disabilities to obtain a percent:
Example:total people with disabilities divided by total population = percent of people with disabilities in the state
4. Multiply this percent by your community's population to obtain an estimate of the number of people with disabilities living in your area:
Example: percent of people with disabilities in the state times community
population = estimated total people with disabilities in your community
