VCURES Participates in NIH National Research Service Award
Program
VCURES has joined the VCU School of Medicine's Laboratory
of Tissue Repair in its highly acclaimed National Research
Service Award (NRSA) program as a resource for training of
post-doctoral fellows. The Laboratory of Tissue Repair oversees
this Postdoctoral Training Grant from the National Institutes
of Health. The purpose of the program is to provide two years
of research experience for postdoctoral fellows in the area
of Tissue Injury and Repair. The Laboratory has 30 years of
experience in the field of wound healing and has trained a
large number of residents and postdoctoral fellows. Currently
the Laboratory has over 4,000 square feet of modern bench
space with fully equipped tissue culture facilities, biochemical
equipment and molecular biology facilities. Although the program
had traditionally focused on wound healing, the program has
now established a strong affiliation with VCURES. This NRSA
program will now offer training for fellows in the study of
microcirculatory oxygen transport during shock, developing
new noninvasive spectroscopic means to detect tissue hypoxia
and inflammation, developing new models of shock and multiple
organ failure, development of new strategies to control high-pressure
bleeding in emergency settings, modulating the immune system
during shock, and metabolic engineering to produce states
of suspended animation to improve outcomes in shock. Depending
on the applicant's interest and chosen project, the applicant
can expect to receive training in state of the art molecular
biology techniques including: genomics; proteomics; spectrophotometic
analysis of microvascular oxygen transport; large and small
whole animal physiology; and various aspects of materials
science and biomedical engineering.
This NIH-sponsored Training Program is open to all candidates
holding M.D., M.D./Ph.D. and Ph.D. degrees. Applicants holding
M.D. degrees should be dedicated to a career in academic research.
The applicant must be a U.S. Citizen or a non-citizen national
of the U.S. or must be lawfully admitted for permanent residence.
Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible.
Members of minority groups will be given special consideration.
