VCURES Invited to Speak and Participate at DOD Consensus
Conference on Preclinical Models of Hemorrhage
Rao Ivatury, MD: VCURES Associate Director and Chairman VCUHS
Division of Trauma Surgery was selected to speak at a Consensus
Conference entitled: Preclinical Models of Hemorrhage With
and Without Head Injury (http://www.traumamodels.org/).
The conference was sponsored by the Office of Naval Research
and the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command and
was held in Chantilly, VA and held March 12-14, 2002 . The
conference focused on the difficult task of selecting and
creating the most appropriate preclinical models of injury
reflective of the combat setting. Invited speakers were selected
based on the laboratory and clinical expertise in various
aspects of trauma care.
Dr. Ivatury's presentation was entitled: Metabolic End-Points,
and focused on the use of various tissue specific makers of
tissue oxygenation as end-points in the development of appropriate
preclinical models of traumatic shock. Other conference attendees
from VCURES included Kevin Ward, MD Associate VCURES Director
and Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine, James Terner,
PhD, VCURES Senior Investigator and Professor of Chemistry,
and Roger Loria, PhD, Senior VCURES Investigator and Professor
of Microbiology and Immunology.
