| VCURES Provides Important Lectures at METI’S
Annual HSPN Meeting.
Two senior VCURES investigators were selected to provide
key lectures and workshops at the 2003 Human Simulator Patient
Network (HSPN) meeting sponsored by METI (http://www.meti.com/home.html).
The conference was held February 25-28th in Tampa, Florida
and is considered the premier user’s conference on medical
simulation providing state of the art sessions in human simulation
technology and uses. METI is considered the world’s
leader in physiologically based human medical simulation.
Dr. Joseph Ornato, senior VCURES investigator and Professor
and Chairman of the VCU Department of Emergency Medicine was
one of the keynote speakers. His talk entitled, Importance
of HPS Training in a High Performance Emergency Care System
– The Richmond Model, provided key insights into how
HPS training is being incorporated into Richmond’s EMS
system (http://www.raaems.org/),
which is highly acclaimed as one of the most advanced in the
world. Dr. Ornato is the medical director for the system.
Dr. Marsh Cuttino, VCURES Director for Simulation and Medical
Informatics and Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine
and Anesthesiology provided several preconference and conference
workshops. These included:
1) Simulating Weapons of Mass Destruction
2) Resident Airway Competency Evaluation.
3) Using the HPS in Emergency Medicine
4) Using the ECS in Emergency Medicine
Dr. Cuttino also served as the discussion leader for the
Emergency Medicine interest group at the conference.
VCURES continues to be at the cutting edge of human simulation
for acute care training and is currently engaging in projects
examining human factors and performance using simulation.
