Care Research Award
The American Academy of Pediatrics’ Section on Critical
Care awarded Melissa Evans, MD its 2002 New Investigator Research
Award. Dr. Evans is a Pediatric Critical Care fellow in the
VCU Department of Pediatrics and Division of Pediatric Critical
Care. The fellowship is three years in duration with one year

The project explores the utility of modulating certain metabolic

in shock states thus potentially buying precious time for
other interventions.
The award includes a grant in the amount of $10,000 and an
invitation to present her work at the 2003 American Academy
of Pediatrics National Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans
during the Critical Care Section’s scientific meeting.
It should also be noted that Dr. Evans utilized a prestigious
NIH National Research Service Award grant under the direction
of Dr. Robert Diegelmann to complete her research year. Dr.
Diegelmann is a senior VCURES investigator and a Professor
of Biochemistry and Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Evans who is now in the clinical training phase of her
pediatric critical care fellowship plans to continue her research
in this area after the completion of her training. For more
