Virginia Commonwealth dropped a 71-61 decision to Colonial
Athletic Association opponent North Carolina-Wilmington on
Wednesday at Trask Coliseum in Wilmington, N.C. The Rams fell to
9-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference, while the Seahawks
improved to 9-7 on the season and 3-3 in the CAA.
We gave them too many easy looks at the basket, Virginia Commonwealth head coach Mack McCarthy said. We could not contest their shots.
North Carolina-Wilmington connected on 47.3 percent (26-of-55) of its shots from the field for the game compared to just 38.7 percent (24-of-62) for Virginia Commonwealth.
The Rams hit 42.9 percent of their shots from the field in the first half, but turned the ball over 13 times as they trailed 35-28 heading into the locker room Freshman Matt Treadwell (Annapolis, Md.) scored eight of his career-high 14 points and pulled down seven of the Rams' 21 total rebounds in the first half.
Virginia Commonwealth cut its deficit to six with a 4-0 run of its own early in the second half, but could never get closer. The Seahawks stretched their lead to as many as 17 points behind the performance of their backcourt duo, freshman Brett Blizzard and junior Barron Thelmon, to grab the win. Blizzard and Thelmon combined for 35 points for the Seahawks. Junior guard Bo Jones (Richmond, Va.) led the Rams with 15.
The Rams return to the ALLTEL Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center on Saturday when they serve as host to CAA foe George Mason. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
