VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH COMEBACK
FALLS JUST SHORT AS JAMES MADISON TAKES 84-75 DECISION
2-2-00
Box Score
Virginia Commonwealth nearly erased a 21-point halftime deficit,
but could not come all the way back as James Madison held on for
an 84-75 win on Wednesday night in the JMU Convocation Center.
The loss was the first for the Rams in four games against the
Dukes.
Junior guard Bo Jones (Richmond, Va.) led Virginia Commonwealth
once again, scoring 21 points to lead the Rams. It was Jones'
seventh game this season with at least 20 points. LaMar Taylor
(Richmond, Va) reached double figures for the third time in four
games as he finished with 18 points, while forward Shawn Hampton
(Baltimore, Md.) added 17 for Virginia Commonwealth. Jabari Outtz
and Jamar Perry each scored 22 to lead the Dukes.
Turnovers and tough luck from the field hurt the Rams in the
first half. Virginia Commonwealth hit just 37.9 percent of its
shots (11-of-29) and committed 13 turnovers in the opening frame.
James Madison appeared to put the game away as it scored seven
unanswered points in the final 80 seconds of the first half to
take a 49-28 lead into the locker room.
But the Rams would not go down quietly. Virginia Commonwealth
outscored the Dukes 20-10 in the first eight minutes of the final
period to cut James Madison's lead to 59-48 with just over 12
minutes left to play. The Rams would stage another run, cutting
the lead to two on two occasions, the last when the score was
70-68 with 3:12 on the clock. The Dukes, however, were able to
withstand the charge, and held on for the victory.
The loss drops Virginia Commonwealth to 10-9 on the season with a
3-5 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play. James Madison is
now 12-6 overall and 6-2 in conference action. The Rams begin the
last half of a four-game road trip on Saturday as they travel to
William & Mary. The game is set for a 3:30 p.m. start.
