Box Score
1-22-00
Virginia Commonwealth was able to stay close despite a blistering
opening-half performance from the field by George Mason, but
could not come away with the win as the Rams fell 76-63 on
Saturday night in front of a record sellout crowd of 7,621 in the
ALLTEL Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
Bo Jones (Richmond, Va.) scored 18 second-half points for
Virginia Commonwealth to share game-high honors with 23 points.
Junior guard LaMar Taylor (Richmond, Va.) added 10 points for the
Rams. Erik Herring was one of three George Mason players in
double figures as he led the Patriots with
23 points.
The Patriots came streaking out of the gate, as they hit 16 of
their 26 shots in the first half, a 61.5 percent clip that was
the best shooting percentage in one half by a Virginia
Commonwealth opponent this season. George Mason went on a 21-8
run midway through the first half to take a 26-13 lead. Patriots'
forward George Evans scored eight of his 18 points on the night
during the run. The Rams slowly got back into the game and cut
the deficit to four points, 33-29, but trailed by six as the
first period came to an end.
In the second half, Virginia Commonwealth took control early,
scoring 10 of the first 12 points in the period to take a 39-38
lead with 17:23 left to play. It would prove to be the Rams' last
lead of the game, as George Mason took advantage of fouls by
Virginia Commonwealth and converted on 18 of its 26 trips to the
free-throw line in the final 20 minutes. The Patriots' lead was
in double figures for most of the game's final three minutes.
The loss drops the Rams to 9-7 overall and 2-3 in the Colonial
Athletic Association. George Mason now stands at 10-8 on the
season with a 5-2 mark in CAA play. Virginia Commonwealth plays
the back end of a two-game homestand on Wednesday when the Rams
take on East Carolina at the ALLTEL Pavilion. The game is set for
a 7:30 tip-off.
