WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Junior Mike Johnson made two free throws with 31 seconds remaining to break a 58-58 and lift William & Mary to a 65-63 victory over Virginia Commonwealth in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball Saturday night at William & Mary Hall.

The Rams battled back from a 12-point first half deficit and took their first lead since the game's opening stages when senior L.F. Likcholitov's (St. Petersburg, Russia/St. Petersburg Tech. Univ.) dunk gave a VCU a 38-36 advantage with 15:36 left to play. The Rams led 46-42 with 11:29 remaining before William & Mary embarked on an 11-1 run capped by Cody Carbaugh's three-point basket which put the Tribe up 53-47 with 6:35 to go. VCU answered with seven straight points to take a 54-53 advantage with four minutes to play,and the teams traded baskets until Johnson's decisive free throws in the waning seconds. The Tribe (5-9, 2-3 CAA) sealed the win by making six consecutive foul shots in the final 20 seconds and handed the Rams (10-7) their first conference loss in four games this season.

Likcholitov led VCU in scoring for the second straight game and finished with 16 points and three blocks in the loss. Senior Bo Jones (Richmond, Va/Huguenot) added 13 points for the Rams, while sophomore Willie Taylor (Smyrna, Tenn./LaVergne) compiled 11 points and a career-high five assists. William & Mary's Jim Moran led all players with a 24-point, nine rebound performance.

VCU returns to the ALLTEL Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center for a CAA matchup with James Madison (6-9, 2-3 CAA) Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
