RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Bo Jones (Richmond, Va./Huguenot) had a team-high 24 points and sank a desperation three-point field goal with 1:3 seconds remaining in overtime to lead Virginia Commonwealth to a dramatic 84-81 victory over East Carolina in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball Saturday afternoon at the ALLTEL Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.

Jones scored seven points in the final 29 seconds of the final period and heaved a shot from nearly three-quarters the length of the court to give the Rams (9-6, 2-0 CAA) their second conference win in four days. The basket also overshadowed a valiant comeback attempt by the Pirates (9-5, 1-2 CAA), who trailed VCU 55-39 with 9:08 remaining in regulation before rallying to tie the game at 70-70 on a Kenyatta Brown jumper with five seconds left to play.

East Carolina took a 78-75 lead with 2:15 remaining in overtime on a three-point play from junior Fred Primus, who led the Pirates with 24 points. Sophomore Wilie Taylor (Smyrna, Tenn./LaVergne) brought the Rams to within one when he scored at the 1:57 mark, and Jones put VCU ahead 79-78 with a pair of free throws with 29 seconds left. ECU's Gabriel Mikulas scored seconds later to give the Pirates an 80-79 advantage before Jones drove the lane and scored with 12 seconds showing on the clock to give VCU the lead back. ECU's Brown was then fouled with 2.6 seconds left, but could convert just one of his two foul shots to knot the game at 84-81 and set up Jones' heroics.

"I just caught it and threw it," said Jones. "...and when I saw the net go up I couldn't believe it. God blessed us tonight." "Sometimes its better to be lucky than good," said VCU head coach
Mack McCarthy, whose Rams are the lone unbeaten team in the CAA following George Mason's 57-53 loss to UNC-Wilmington this afternoon. "We were better most of the game but needed a miraculous shot to win it. But we're 2-0 in the league, and maybe this (game) is something we can build on."

Taylor added 21 points and a career-high 10 rebounds for VCU, which now has a 3-1 record in home overtime games this season and 7-1 lifetime mark at the ALLTEL Pavilion in games going extra minutes . Mikulas finished with 20 points for the Pirates in defeat, while freshman Erroyl Bing pulled down a game-best 14 rebounds.

VCU will next host George Mason (8-5, 3-1 CAA) in a crucial CAA early-season showdown Wednesday night. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
