Abell and Galinsky's article, "Introducing Students to Computer-Based Group Work Practice," was recently published in the winter 2002 issue of the "Journal of Social Work Education." Green, Baskind and Bellin's, "Results of the Doctoral Faculty Publication Project: Journal Article Productivity and its Correlates in the 1990s," was also published in this issue. Stoesz has a letter to the editor published in this issue.
Elizabeth Cramer, Ph.D., Social Work
Cramer has been invited to participate in a meeting on March 25 with the Office on Women's Health to discuss strategies in addressing some communities "on the fringes" of Violence Against Women. These communities include young, elderly, immigrant/refugee and disabled women and men as partners in prevention. The purpose of this meeting is for leaders from national nursing and social work organizations to convene and develop policy and practice strategies in improving the quality of education, prevention, screening and intervention strategies related to violence against women.
Delores Dungee-Anderson, D.S.W., Social Work
Dungee-Anderson was appointed by President Eugene P. Trani to serve as the chairperson of the University Promotion and Tenure Policy Committee. As chairperson, she meets with the provost about committee issues when necessary, and the provost addresses the committee about specific tasks in which the committee has requested input. This is the first time a female as well as African-American has been selected for this position. In addition, Dungee-Anderson is the first person from the School of Social Work to chair this committee.
William Duvall, Ph.D., Student Affairs
After 30 years of service to VCU, Duvall, associate vice
provost and dean of Student Affairs, is planning to retire
at the end of May. Duvall first came to VCU in 1972 from
Texas Tech University. During his years of service to VCU,
he has worked closely with students and has been an important
part of the team that has made certain projects possible.
Some of these include the opening of the Student Commons
in 1984, the addition of Phase Two in 1993 and the beginning
of construction of Phase Three in May of this year. Other
work by Duvall includes the development of the VCU Honor
Code and guidelines for the SGA Appropriations Committee.
Duvall looks forward to having more personal time upon his
retirement.
Allen Jones, Media Production Services
Jones' exhibit, "Return to Normandy," will be on display
through July 21 at The Mighty Eighth Air Force Heritage
Museum in Savannah, GA. The black and white photographic
exhibit documents the D-Day beaches as they appear today,
nearly 60 years after the invasion of Normandy.
Mary Katherine O'Connor, Ph.D., Social Work
O'Connor has been elected to serve as a member of the National Family Support Roundtable Leadership Council. The mission of this group is to prevent child abuse and neglect and to strengthen families through mutual self-help parent support groups.
Iris A. Parham, Ph.D., Gerontology
Parham, chair of the department of gerontology and executive
director of the Virginia Geriatric Education Center, received
the educator of the year award given by the Virginia Association
on Aging, a statewide not-for-profit inclusive membership
organization. Parham, who has been at VCU since 1977, has
received a number of other awards, including VCU's distinguished
faculty award. She serves as a fellow for both the Gerontological
Society of American and the Association for Gerontology
in Higher Education. Renee Kube, a graduate of the master's
in gerontology program, nominated Parham for the award.
Ralph E. Small, Pharm.D., Pharmacy
Small has been presented with the Russell L. Cecil Award
for "Enhancing the Role of the Pharmacist in the Management
of Arthritis" by the Arthritis Foundation. Since 1956, the
Cecil Awards encourage and honor journalistic efforts that
educate the public about arthritis and the Arthritis Foundation.
In addition, Dr. Small is a professor and Director of Community
programs at MCVH.
Mary Ann Turner, M.D., Anne S. Fulcher, M.D., Radiology
Turner and Fulcher served as expert presenters at the National
Institutes of Health State-of-the-Science Conference in
Bethesda, MD. The conference focus was Endoscopic Retrograde
Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), which has been applied
to the diagnosis and management of a variety of gastrointestinal
disorders. The conference examined the current state of
knowledge regarding the use of ERCP in clinical practice
and identified directions for future research.
Charles West, DMA, Music
West lectured on Dec. 19 at the annual Mid-West Band and
Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, the largest annual gathering
of band and orchestra directors in the world. His lecture
was heard by nearly 600 participants. In addition, a CD
recording of the 2000-2001 VCU Student-Faculty Chamber Orchestra,
under West's direction, was released at the convention.
