  Alzheimer DON Training Tape 1991 45 min. This training tape was designed for professionals providing assessment and case management for older clients with Alzheimer's disease. The tape discusses common characteristics of Alzheimer's disease patients and how those characteristics impact the case manager. It recommends that to work effectively and appropriately with Alzheimer's disease patients, the case manager must allow extra interview time; maintain eye contact; direct questions to the client, not others in the room; use fewer words in questions; watch for nonverbal reactions; and use repetition. The case worker also should do a follow-up interview with family members or caregivers to assess the accuracy and completeness of the information given by the patient. The tape contains several vignettes illustrating the interview process; emphasizing the examination such as the the Mini-Mental State Examination.

  Breathing Lessons: The Life and Work of Mark O'Brien   35 min. According to poet-journalist Mark O'Brien, The two mythologies of disabled people break down to: one B we can't do anything, or two B we can do everything. But the truth is, we're just human. O'Brien contracted polio in childhood. Due to post-polio syndrome as a young adult, he now spends much of his life in an iron lung.   Home Care for People With Alzheimer's Disease 1995 18 min. This film discusses the importance of both verbal and nonverbal communications with Alzheimer's Patients. It will teach you, the caregiver, to deal with memory loss, techniques for communicating without speaking, and how to give clear instructions.
  Tape 1: Communication Home Care for People With Alzheimer's Disease 1995 13 min. This film discusses how a caregiver can structure a patient's activities of daily living: eating, washing, grooming, etc. The caregiver will learn to simplify daily tasks, encourage self-care, how to break down a task into steps, and will be given specific instructions for structuring meal times.
  Tape 2: Activities of Daily Living Home Care for People With Alzheimer's Disease 1995 13 min. This film will teach caregivers how to recognize potential dangers in the home. The importance of conducting a home safety audit is discussed, as are the extra precautions for cooking, and how to deal with wandering.
I I'm Pretty Old 1995 20 min. Growing to be very old means adjusting to gradual losses: eyesight, hearing, mobility, and sometimes independence. 32.3 million Americans over the age of 65 live in nursing homes. While it is often the best possible arrangement in terms of care and security, for many it means adjusting to a very different lifestyle. Several residents of a nursing home discuss aspects of aging and of life in a long-term care facility.

She focuses on what her grandmother can still do, as opposed to what she has lost, with the hope of encouraging caregivers to look at ways a person with AD can still be engaged.
  In Search of Balance 1998 23 min. A practical approach to learning effective methods for assessing and treating gambling-addicted older adults. Includes How the Senior Gambler Feels and, "Soft Signs" of a Gambling Problem, 30-page booklet also available.
  Inner World of Aphasia 1968 24 min. Explores the world of the aphasic person both from his own and from surrounding caregivers' viewpoints. The frustration felt by both and the misconceptions people have about aphasia are clearly shown and discussed in this enlightening film.
  Interacting with Alzheimer's Patients: Alzheimer's Do's and Don'ts 2000 20 min. In a discussion with several caregivers, Peter Rabins, M.D., identifies the do's and don'ts of interacting with individuals with Alzheimer's disease.
  Interacting with Alzheimer's Patients: Recognizing and Preventing Caregiver Burnout 2000 20 min. Often caregivers don't recognize signs of burnout until it's too late. In this tape, Dr. Peter Rabins helps caregivers recognize signs of burnout. Recommendations are suggested on how to prevent burnout.
  It Could Happen to Anyone 1996 26 min. Shows older adults struggling with alcohol while coping with the challenges of aging. Video, program coordinator's guide and educational curricula from NCoA/SAMHSA also available.
J Journey: A Practical and Spiritual Guide for Living 2001 40 min. Journey philosophy tells a story of compassionate care and living fully, especially as persons enter into their latter years. Through the support that the philosophy fosters, time will be spent reviewing what matters in their lives, reconnecting with their basic value and belief systems and reflecting on how they want to live now and how they want to live as their life comes to an end. The ultimate purpose will be facilitating individual care decisions that are right for them and not leaving family members or professionals responsible for these complex decisions. In the end, they chose to let go with grace and dignity.
Top of Page Just to Have a Peaceful Life 1990 10 min. This video profiles a woman who was married to an abusive husband for 45 years. She had five children who were also routinely abused by the husband. She left her husband three times when the children were small only to return because of financial need. She kept hoping he would mellow as he got older, but finally left him again because of health problems. She died at age 63 without ever achieving the peaceful life for which she longed.
L The Last Right 1984 30 min. A touching story about a family that consists of live-in grandparents. The granddad begins to suffer from hardening of the arteries in the brain, and the family faces many hardships. The granddad decides he must stop suffering and in order to do this, he ends his life.

The film opens with an in-depth exploration of the social relationships what accompany the late adult through this final stage of the human life cycle. The role and importance of personal relationships is shown, followed by an in-depth look at a variety of these relationships. Long-term marriages are studied in terms of their unique characteristics as well as their unique benefits to the partners. Issues related to other family relationships as in sibling relationships, those with one’s adult children and with grandchildren are discussed.

  Living With Grace 1983 28 min. Explores the life of one woman suffering from Alzheimer's Disease - her loss of memory, emotional mood swings, catastrophic reactions, and confusion. A five month documentation presents her life at home with her caring husband, his efforts, and their solutions so that their lives can continue with dignity and meaning.
  Looking for Yesterday 1978 29 min. Looks at institutionalized older adults who, instead of receiving reality orientation, receive "fantasy therapy", so that caregivers "walk" with older adults through the past to the external present. The film shows the importance of building a trusting relationship between adults and caregivers through listening, talking, and learning from older adults.
