Some cities pave over their past, but the streets of Richmond are constant reminders of its history and America's history. With its Jefferson-designed Capitol, antebellum mansions, grand boulevards and legacy of Civil War sites, Richmond weaves yesteryear with today in delightful fashion. This city also boasts white-water rafting, Fortune 500s, NASA's medical tech facility, lavish gardens, cozy bistros, the largest Victorian district in the US and significant art and history museums. VCU Elderhostel participants stay downtown at the Holiday Inn Express Downtown Richmond, 201 East Clay Street. Charming hotel in downtown River District; spacious rooms, business center, fitness room, free parking, free passes to nearby YMCA. Walk to attractions, State Capitol district, VCU campuses. What is it about Richmond's past and present that give it such character? Perhaps its history, which spans 400 years, from Pocahontas and the original Americans through Colonial days and the Civil War to its status now as a financial center. Or its magnificent gardens, grand boulevards and gracious architecture. Or its important personages that include Washington, Jefferson and Patrick Henry. Find out about all of these in this delightful program that features history and field trips to historic Jackson Ward, Maymont Gardens and Arboretum with its extraordinary Gilded Age mansion, storied Monument Avenue, the Museum of the Confederacy, colonial Wilton House Plantation and some special surprises.


Program #16907 Movies, Music, and Marvels of History in Richmond
Program Dates: May 4-7, June 21-24, September 27-30

Experience the history of Richmond and its surroundings through the lens of Hollywood. Discover why this city is one of Hollywood’s favorites for filmmaking on instructor-led field trips through historic Richmond. On-site discussions illuminate St. John's Church, where Patrick Henry made his famous speech, and Tuckahoe Plantation, Jefferson's boyhood home. Investigate notorious Belle Isle; the State Capitol, designed by Jefferson; and Tredegar Ironworks, Richmond's Civil War Museum. Explore music made especially for films and the musical styles embedded in Virginia history, from gospel to blues, that made its musicians famous. As a special highlight, enjoy lunch at the resplendent Jefferson Hotel, a favored film location.

Four Centuries in the Capitol District
Program Dates: December 11-14

Celebrate history, traditions and the season’s magic in Richmond's Capitol District. You’ll delight in holiday splendor at a Gilded Age estate, a fabulous 1895 hotel, St. John's Church, and Lewis Ginter Botanical GardenFest with a festive dinner and guided evening walk through its fantasyland of flowers, trees, lights, conservatory displays, and woodland sculptures. Other sites decorated for the season include the Capitol and Executive Mansion, John Marshall House, the Valentine Richmond History Museum and Wickham House. We'll also examine splendid architecture and the legacies of leaders such as Chief Justice John Marshall, Presidents Washington and Jefferson, and patriot Patrick Henry in on-site presentations at historic sites.
