VCU Elderhostel in Harrisonburg

Program # 2016 The Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival: A Study in Making Beautiful
Music.
Program Dates: June 17-21, 2009
This acclaimed summer music festival is devoted to promoting the appreciation and
understanding of the music of J.S. Bach and another composer, country, era or people each year. The orchestra
includes fine professional instrumentalists from all over the country who travel to Harrisonburg each June for
intensive rehearsals and vibrant performances. The first-rate choir blends singers involved in local choral
programs. In addition to classes with festival personnel and guest lecturers, you'll get a behind-the-scenes look
at how the festival works. Open rehearsals provide opportunities to observe the shaping of the music. Highlights
include two major concerts and outstanding chamber music performances featuring composers of all eras.
Elderhostel Programs require walking 2-4 blocks at a time, up to 2 miles per
day, from hotel to classes, activities and restaurants; hilly terrain, with some short steep inclines. Not all
locations are handicapped-accessible.
Program location is Harrisonburg, Virginia. Situated in the heart of Virginia's
Shenandoah Valley, between the Washington National Forest and the Shenandoah National Park, Harrisonburg
celebrates the great outdoors -- wilderness and river adventures, hiking, world-class trout fishing, caverns,
vineyards -- and exciting city life with theater, arts, museums, history, battlefields, two universities, farmers'
markets, festivals and concerts.
