| UROLOGY RESIDENCY TRAINING
The Urology Residency Program at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Medical Center is a five-year (PGY-1 surgery internship plus PGY 2-5 of urology residency) teaching program that encompasses all phases of adult and pediatric urology, leading to American Board of Urology certification eligibility.
Two residents are accepted into the training program each year. The Division of Urology is enrolled in the American Urological Association Residency Matching Program (AUARMP) and is accredited by ACGME Residency Review Committee.
APPLICATION PROCESS:
Applications to the Urology Residency Program should be submitted through The Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). All applications to the Urology Residency Program should be received no later than October 1, 2008. Interviews are held from November to early December. A personal interview is required, and applicants are notified in writing when their applications are complete. Upon receipt of the written invitation for an interview, applicants are directed to contact our academic office to arrange an interview date.

RESIDENCY ROTATION:
- SURGERY INTERNSHIP (PGY-1): The prerequisites for the Urology Residency Program will include one year of surgical internship through the Department of Surgery. Those accepted into the program must complete a pre-urology year in the Department of Surgery’s General Surgery Residency Program at VCU’s MCV Hospitals.
- UROLOGY YEAR 1 (PGY-2): The major emphasis of the first year of urologic training is cultivation of data collection and decision-making skills. During this year, residents complete six-month rotation blocks at VCU’s MCV Hospitals and the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Administration Medical Center (MVAMC). In addition, PGY-2 residents are trained in endoscopy, basic surgical techniques, and outpatient diagnostic procedures.
- UROLOGY YEAR 2 (PGY-3): The major emphasis of the second year of urologic training is academic achievement as well as refinement of clinical decision-making, endoscopic, and surgical skills. During this year, residents complete a six-month rotation in comprehensive adult Urology at the McGuire Veterans Affairs Hospital . An additional six months is devoted to scholarly basic science and clinical resident research.
- UROLOGY YEAR 3 (PGY-4): The major emphasis of the third year of urologic training is development of advanced endoscopic and surgical skills. During this year, residents spend eight months at MCV Hospitals and two months with Virginia Urology; and one month with Urological Specialists of Virginia, a large private practice urology group in Richmond. Rotations provide a concentrated exposure to subspecialty areas of infertility, female urology and minimally invasive laparoscopic urology.
- UROLOGY YEAR 4 (PGY-5): The major emphasis of the chief resident year of urologic training is mastery of surgical skills and clinical decision-making through operative experience and teaching. During this year, residents spend six-month rotations as the chief resident at MCV Hospitals and the McGuire Veterans Affairs Hospital.
