Dr. Vernon OrtonDr. Vernon Orton is an assistant professor of urology at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. He joins the VCU faculty following his fellowship training in minimally invasive and robotic surgery. Dr. Orton is also on the staff at the McGuire VA Medical Center.

Dr. Orton graduated Phi Beta Kappa and received his bachelor of science degree in biology from Morehouse College.  After graduation from Morehouse, Dr. Orton attended Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.  During medical school, Dr. Orton was actively involved on campus as a member of the Admissions Committee and the Student National Medical Association. 

Dr. Orton completed his urology residency at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. He also completed a research project in adjustable passive stiffness (APS) in the urinary bladder. During his residency, Dr. Orton developed an interest in minimally invasive and laparoscopic urology.

Dr. Orton joins VCU after completing a fellowship in minimally invasive and robotic surgery at the City of Hope National Medical Center, one of the busiest robotic surgery centers in the world. Dr. Orton played an instrumental role in the care of over 900 robotic surgery patients last year.  He is experienced in advanced robotic surgery of the bladder, kidney, and prostate and brings this experience to the robotic surgery program at VCU.
