Dr. Lance Hampton is Chairman of the Division and Director of Robotic Urology at VCU Medical Center.

An Associate Professor in the School of Medicine, he is board certified by the American Board of Urology and is fellowship trained in urologic oncology and robotic surgery.

As the medical student clerkship director and director of the acting internship in robotic urology Dr. Hampton is also on the staff at McGuire VA Medical Center.

EDUCATION
Dr. Hampton received his undergraduate degree from Baylor University where he obtained a broad liberal arts education in the arts and sciences. Dr. Hampton served in several leadership roles while an undergraduate. After graduation from Baylor, Dr. Hampton attended Texas Tech University School of Medicine.

Dr. Hampton completed his urology residency at the University of New Mexico. During his residency, he was awarded the Pfizer Scholar award for contributions to urology. Dr. Hampton’s research has been published in Urology, Urologic Clinics of North America, and the Journal of Robotic Surgery. During his residency, Dr. Hampton developed an interest in minimally invasive and laparoscopic urology and was instrumental in initiating a laparoscopic program at the University of New Mexico.

After graduating from his residency, Dr. Hampton was managing partner of Northern Arizona Urology in Flagstaff, Arizona and performed the first laparoscopic nephrectomy in northern Arizona. After several years in private practice, Dr. Hampton completed a fellowship at the City of Hope National Medical Center. City of Hope is the busiest robotic surgery center in the United States and Dr. Hampton was involved in the care of over 1000 robotic surgery patients.

ROBOTIC SURGERY
Dr. Hampton continues to expand the indications for robotic surgery and while on staff at VCU medical center has performed hundreds of robotic operations for both benign and malignant conditions. He has proctored and lectured surgeons learning robotic techniques in the United States, Europe, and Asia. He is also active in teaching medical students, residents, and attending physicians in several disciplines including urology, gynecology, and surgical oncology.
