I. General Urology Acting Internship (AI) - VCU

Objectives:
This rotation provides the student with exposure and experience in the management of urological diseases in both the inpatient and out-patient setting. The student will function as an acting intern and will see and evaluate patients in the outpatient clinic, admit patients to the hospital for workup, accompany them to the operating room and perform minor procedures under supervision. If the student wishes, he may pursue an independent project which could lead to a presentation or publication.
At the conclusion of the 4 week acting internship, the student will be expected to present a 30 minute presentation on a urology topic of their choosing to the urology faculty and residents. This can be a topic of the student’s choosing based on a recent patient encounter or on the student’s interest. The topic must be approved by Dr. Hampton, or in his absence, Dr. Orton. This approval process should be completed by the beginning of the third week of the rotation. Presentations that have not been pre-approved will not be accepted.
Topics chosen should be extremely narrow in scope and contain information outside of the traditional urology textbook. All listeners should be able to learn new information from the student’s lecture. The presentation should be in powerpoint format and a 2-3 page handout should be prepared. The presentation will be given at a meeting of attending physicians and residents on either the Thursday or Friday of the last week of the 4 week rotation. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that this is scheduled. Students should contact Ms. Tina Hamlet 804-828-5320 during the first week of the rotation to schedule a date and time for their presentation.
Evaluation:
Evaluation of the 4th year Acting Intern will be based on observation, verbal, and written evaluations by both residents and attending. A quiz will be given on the last day of the rotation. This quiz will be based on the “National Medical Student Core Curriculum.” This is located on the AUA website, http://www.auanet.org/content/education-and-meetings/med-stu-curriculum.cfm. A printed copy is also available in the urology offices. All students will be expected to read the “Core Subjects” by the end of the rotation.

III. Robotic Urology Acting Internship (AI)

Students assigned to this rotation will be evaluated based upon the following aspects of performance:
- Patient Care, both inpatient and outpatient
- Participation in team rounds
- Participation in robotic skills training
- Conference participation and presentations
- Ability to work effectively as an integral member of the surgical team

Purpose: The robotic urology acting internship was developed to give senior medical students interested in urology the opportunity to participate in an active robotic urological surgical program. It is designed for students that are interested in pursuing urology as a career and have a particular interest in robotic surgery.
This rotation will provide extensive exposure to urologic patients in the inpatient and outpatient settings that are managed with advanced robotic surgical techniques. This includes a wide variety of patient problems including benign and malignant conditions of the kidney, prostate, and bladder.
The AI will act as an integral component of the patient care team.
Specific responsibilities include:
Clinic: The student will participate in Dr. Hampton’s VCU clinic on Wednesday. During this clinic day, the student will see patients independently and will learn preoperative management of robotic urology patients.
Wards: The student will, in a team manner with the general urology service, round on all robotic urology patients and will be primarily responsible for postoperative care under the guidance of other team members.
Surgery: The student will participate in all robotic procedures performed by VCU urology faculty. This will occur at both VCU Medical Center and the McGuire VA Medical Center. The student should expect exposure to the DaVinci robot during procedures under the guidance of the supervising attending physician.
Research: The student will be expected to be an active participant in robotic research including the generation of ideas for further projects. Dedicated time will be available for academic work including reading, watching surgical videos, and participating in robotic research.
Robotic Skills Training: One day per week will be set aside for resident and student teaching on the DaVinci S surgical robot. The student will be an active participant in this teaching and will get “hands-on” experience with the robot. The student will also be able to use this time for research projects that are ongoing.
Conferences: The student will be expected to attend all urology conferences. The student will be expected to give a Urology Grand Rounds presentation at the end of the rotation. The topic will be chosen in collaboration with a robotic faculty and will relate to minimally-invasive or robotic urology.
