VCU Massey Cancer Center expands Urologic Tumor Center

The Urologic Tumor Center at the VCU Massey Cancer Center is steadily increasing its capacity to treat cancers of the urinary system with the addition of a new team member, Dr. Vernon Orton.  Dr. Orton specializes in robotic and minimally invasive techniques and joins Drs. Grob, Guruli and Hampton to deliver the most state-of-the-art care to our patients.

The Center’s clinicians are also now treating patients at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, in addition to current locations on VCU’s MCV Campus, at Stony Point, in Hanover and at the McGuire VA Medical Center.

About the da Vinci Surgical System
Putting the surgeon’s hands at the controls of a state-of-the-art robotic platform, da Vinci enables surgeons to offer a minimally invasive option for complex and delicate surgical procedures.

For the patient, benefits may include significantly less pain, less blood loss and scarring, shorter recovery times, a faster return to normal activities, and better clinical outcomes. The da Vinci system can make very small incisions with greater precision, thus offering the most-effective, least-invasive surgical treatment option available.

One of the main advantages offered by the da Vinci system is the unique dual scopes that provide the surgeon sitting at the controls with a three-dimensional view of the surgical site. Learn more at: http://www.davincisurgery.com/urology

About our Doctors

Dr. Guruli, a native of Georgia in the former USSR, completed his internship, two residencies and a research fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and earned his Ph.D. following a research fellowship at the National Oncological Research Center in Moscow. He is also a board-certified urologist.

Prior to joining VCU he was a faculty member in the department of surgery, division of urology, with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Guruli has nearly 75 scientific publications and abstracts. He also has a patent pending for “endothelin axis and the action of dendritic cells.” Guruli speaks English, Georgian and Russian.

Dr. Grob completed his urological oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Currently, he is the Program Director of Urology Residency Training Program and the Chief of Urology at McGuire VA Medical Center. A native of Virginia, Dr. Grob received his medical school education and residency at Eastern Virginia School of Medicine.

Dr. Hampton is a board-certified urologist who completed a fellowship at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Los Angeles. He performed 400 robotic surgical procedures on patients using the da Vinci system. Earlier in his career he was in private practice for five years in Flagstaff, Ariz., after completing his residency and internship at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque.

Hampton’s other areas of expertise include greenlight laser photosensitive vaporization of the prostate, laparoscopic urologic procedures, holmium laser lithotripsy for difficult urinary stone disease and Deflux injection for vesicoureteral reflux.

Dr. Orton is a board-eligible urologist who recently completed a fellowship at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Los Angeles.  He was instrumental in the care of over 900 patients during this time.

Dr. Orton is a native of Virginia and received his medical school education and residency training from VCU School of Medicine.

The Urologic Center’s Team Approach
VCU Massey Cancer Center pioneered the concept of multidisciplinary teams — a practice in which multiple genito-urinary cancer specialists meet regularly to evaluate, discuss and plan treatments for patients. This approach means that patients can get all of their treatments at the same place from people who work together and communicate regularly, rather than putting the burden on patients to coordinate communication among various doctors throughout the region.

Other team members include John Roberts, MD, a medical oncologist with expertise in kidney cancers, who also serves as associate director of clinical research for VCU Massey Cancer Center; Mitchell Anscher, chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology specializing in prostate cancers; Michael Hagan, MD, Ph.D, with expertise in genitourinary, prostate, bladder and testicular cancers and a researcher focused on the effects of irradiation on biological systems; Harry Koo, MD, a surgeon specializing in urology who also performs pediatric surgeries; Mayer Grob, MD, a surgeon specializing in urology; Jinxing Yu, MD, a diagnostic radiologist; and Jennifer Hopsicker, RN, who coordinates the clinic.
