Laparoscopic/Robotic Surgery
LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY
Urologists at VCU are highly skilled in using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques. These procedures are performed with the latest surgical and video equipment to ensure the highest quality patient outcomes. Laparoscopy involves using small incisions to explore the abdominal and retroperitoneal spaces.
Currently, our fellowship trained urologists are using laparoscopy to perform many operations that were traditionally done with large incisions. With this new technique, our patients experience less pain, a shorter hospitalization, and faster recovery.
We perform the following laparoscopic procedures:
- Lymph Node Dissection
- Management of Undescended Testes
- Partial nephrectomy and Radical Nephrectomy
ROBOTIC SURGERY
VCU has recently installed the most sophisticated robotic surgery system in existence. The Intuitive Surgical da Vinci S system is now available for operations performed by our urology team. This new robotic system is the most advanced robotic surgical system available with four robotic arms and high-definition video capability.
This state-of-the-art robot provides the surgeon with multiple advantages:
- 10X video magnification
- True to life, 3-dimensional vision
- Endowrist technology to provide 6 degrees of freedom for the robotic instruments
VCU has committed to providing patients with the highest level of urologic care by purchasing the da Vinci S system and by recruiting new highly skilled surgeons to the Richmond area.
- Dr. Lance Hampton recently joined VCU as Director of Robotic Urology after completing a fellowship in robotic and laparoscopic cancer surgery at the City of Hope Hospital in California. >> to contact Dr. Hampton
- Dr. Georgi Guruli has joined VCU as Director of Urologic Oncology. Dr. Guruli was a faculty member of the department of urology at the New Jersey Medical School.
