Who can participate?
Graduate students who are enrolled in early childhood education,
early childhood special education, nursing, occupational therapy,
physical therapy, psychology and social work at Virginia Commonwealth
University are eligible to apply to this program and become
UPLink scholars. Students from underrepresented groups and
students with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
Graduate students in early childhood special education
16 UPLink scholars per year receive in-state tuition support
for graduate studies in early childhood education with specialized
training in interdisciplinary skills and severe disabilities.
The students admitted to the early childhood special education
program at VCU complete a 46- to 48-hour comprehensive program
leading to full qualification and teacher licensure in early
childhood special education. This graduate program prepares
UPLink scholars for early childhood special education teacher
licensure and for roles in early intervention and preschool
special education programs. There are Web-based
resources to assist in applying to this graduate program.
Graduate students in related disciplines
12 graduate students enrolled in related fields at VCU -
early childhood education, nursing, occupational therapy,
physical therapy, psychology and social work - are accepted
into the program each year to complete the 10-credit interdisciplinary
certificate program in addition to their existing discipline-specific
program. Students receive in-state tuition support for two
semesters.
