Writing Process and Practice (ENGL491)

Undergraduates interested in working in the University College Writing Center must first complete Writing Process and Practice (ENGL491). The director of the Writing Center teaches this course in both fall and spring semester.  Currently, the course is offered Tuesday and Thursday, 12:30 – 1:45.

 

About the Course

Writing Process and Practice (ENGL491) explores writing theory and practice, aiming to improve the style and rhetorical awareness of individual writers as well as preparing these students to become consultants in the Writing Center. The course focuses on the study and practical application of writing theory and pedagogy and process oriented writing assignments, as well as the development of writing and consulting styles. The latter part of the course requires 15 hours of observation and participation in Writing Center work.

 

Course Activities include:

  • Reading, discussing, and critiquing writing and writing center pedagogy.
  • Weekly journal explorations,
  • Reflective and argumentative essays
  • Participation in writing workshops in class
  • Sharing and writing about experiences as writers and writing center consultants
  • Placement in the Writing Center (first as observer, then co-consultant, then consultant).
