Program Information

The curriculum in Pre-paramedic and Emergency Medical Services Administration offered by the College of Humanities and Sciences meets the minimum academic requirements for application to the bachelor of science degree in Emergency Medical Services Administration and clinical paramedic studies offered by the School of Medicine and the College of Humanities and Sciences. Students intending to apply to the junior- and senior-year professional program at another institution should consult that institution's bulletin for specific pre-requisites.

The first class in the professional program is expected to matriculate in the school of medicine in fall 2009.  Students can start coursework preparing for entrance into the professional program anytime prior to this.

Admissions Information

Admission to and satisfactory completion of the two-year preparatory program offered by the College of Humanities and Sciences does not constitute admission to the junior- and senior-year professional program on the MCV Campus. In the fall of the year preceding the year of desired admission, the student must apply separately to the professional program on the MCV Campus through Undergraduate Admissions.

Satisfactory completion of the two-year preparatory program does not constitute admission to the upper-level professional program at the School of Medicine. Applicants to this concentration must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the pre-professional and general education courses (including EMSA 200, 201 and 202) taken the first two years. A curriculum outline follows.

A grade of “C” or higher is required in all pre-professional and general education courses designated by an asterisk (*) and in all EMSA courses.

Progression
Any student who receives less than a “C” in a general education course specified by an asterisk or any EMSA major course must repeat the course with a “C” or better. Progression to the next level of all pre-requisite clinical courses is based upon satisfactory completion of all pre-requisite courses of the current year. Non-clinical courses at the next level in the paramedic major may be taken before students officially progress to that level. Appeal of all progression issues is made to the Undergraduate Admission, Policy and Progression Committee.

The clinical laboratory grading system is satisfactory or unsatisfactory. Unsatisfactory clinical application results in a grade of “F” for the course. A student may fail a clinical course prior to the completion of the course under certain circumstances. A student whose conduct is judged to be clinically unsafe may be dismissed at any time from a clinical unit. Unsafe clinical performance is defined as behavior that is actually or potentially injurious to patients or staff and is out of the range of ordinary student mistakes. Dismissal for the remainder of the course results in a failing grade for the course, as does any failure to meet course objectives.

There are additional requirements for satisfactory progression in the EMSA program, and all students are responsible for compliance with additional school policies, listed in the Emergency Medical Services and Administration Program Policy Manual, available on the program Web site at www.ctcce.vcu.edu.

Also, any student who has been convicted of a felony may be ineligible for licensure as a paramedic. Students or applicants should address any questions of this nature to a legal adviser prior to entry.

Application information

The professional program starts in the beginning of a fall semester. The deadline to apply to the EMT paramedic program will be in the early spring semester. It is advised that students begin working on their application in October. The best time to submit applications is after grades are published for the fall semester preceding fall entry. While it is recommended, it is not necessary to submit all the application materials at one time. A folder will be kept at the admissions office for each applicant so they may turn in material as they become available. An application packet for the EMT paramedic program may be obtained from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Collecting Letters of Evaluation

The Office of Pre-Health Sciences Advising does not collect letters of reference for Pre-EMT Paramedic students. Students should collect the letters themselves and submit them, along with the application, transcripts and personal statement. Provide a copy of the recommendation form and an envelope to individuals who will be writing your recommendations, and ask that they return it by a specified date.

Further advice for collecting letters of recommendation.

CPR Certification

Students entering the Emergency Medical Services and Administration program must be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation before they begin their first clinical course, prior to matriculation in the sophomore year. CPR certification must include:

• One- and two-rescuer CPR.
• CPR for infants, children and adults.
• Rescue-breathing for choking infants, children and adults.

Students are required to show evidence of CPR certification valid to the end of academic year before the first day of class each year. Those who are not certified may not enroll in clinical courses.
