Steps in Choosing a Major

Choosing a Major | VCU Programs of Study | Steps in Choosing a Major "Majoring in..." | Common Major Myths | Curriculum Worksheets

The process of choosing a major consists of four steps. Depending on where you currently are in your decision making, your first step in the process may vary.

Step 1: Find out about yourself. What are your
interests, abilities, talents, values, goals and lifestyle preferences?

Step 2: Generate alternatives. Create a list of majors based on what you learn about yourself. (The majors should be related to the areas you explore in Step 1.)

Step 3: Gather information. Learn about the alternatives by reading, discussing, experiencing and thinking.

Step 4: Select a major. With your advisor, discuss narrowed options and target a major and/or minor. Review the order to take your classes and begin your new major.
