The University College provides a common academic advising experience for all first-year students and those who are not directly admitted into a professional school. The academic advising program addresses academic requirements and policies, choosing a program of study and identifying and exploring educational and career goals.

As generalists on freshman issues and specialists in specific programs, UC advisors ensure that students identify with both the university and their college/school/department.  This arrangement provides a common advising experience for students during their critical first year.

The University College also provides intensive academic support for conditionally admitted students. Conditionally admitted students participate in a year-long program of academic counseling, orientation courses, peer mentoring and learning support, including tutoring and Supplemental Instruction before becoming fully admitted to VCU.
