What is VCU’s Summer Reading Program? VCU’s Summer Reading Program introduces incoming students to the academic and intellectual culture of VCU through a common reading experience. Over the summer, you’ll read a book selected by VCU faculty and students that you’ll discuss in different settings during freshman year.
How was this year’s book selected? The book was selected by the summer reading selection committee, a representative group of faculty, staff and students, administrators and representatives from the Board of Visitors. Hundreds of titles were investigated and the final selection was made from a short list of books.
Why did you choose the book that you did? This year’s theme is History, Memory and Possibility which is the central theme of the Focused Inquiry courses in the 2009-2010 academic year. Participants will focus on the relationship between the past, various interpretations of the past, and visions for the future. Also covered will be the role of imagination, storytelling, utopian and apocalyptic myths, and the interpretation and documentation of the present as history. This theme will raise the question of whether humanity uses, misuses, or simply ignores history.
Am I required to read this book? New students are expected to read the book prior to their return to campus in the fall. Copies of the book will be distributed to all students attending orientation.
I understand that the books are being distributed at orientation, but what if I don’t attend orientation? All new students are expected to read the book prior to their arrival on campus. If you don’t attend orientation, you should purchase the book and be prepared to discuss it upon your arrival on campus.
Will I be tested on the book? You will not be tested on the book or your knowledge of its contents. However, you will be expected to participate in a book discussion during Welcome Week. In addition, a number of freshman classes will be using this book as a point of discussion during your first year at VCU.
