Learning Communities

Living Learning Program for Pre-Health Students

Learning communities provide a way for students to experience the benefits of a small college environment within a large university setting. Learning communities promote interaction with peers, faculty and University College staff, offer opportunities to become involved in the life of the university and help students achieve greater levels of academic success.

There are two types of learning communities available through the University College.

The Freshman Interest Group (FIG) program guarantees students three to four common freshman courses during their first semester. Each FIG has no more than 25 students. Students in the FIG all take UNIV 101 Introduction to the University together as their anchor course. Students can also co-enroll in two or three additional classes. FIGs give students the opportunities to form study groups and develop relationships with as many as 24 other students who share common classes.

The Residential Villages (RV’s) were developed through a partnership between Residential Life and Housing and the University College, are the newest on-campus housing opportunity. In the program, first-year students live in a residence hall community with their peers who have common academic or personal interests. These residential villages are located in Brandt/Rhoads Hall and Johnson Hall. The program aims to seamlessly connect a student’s academic life, residence hall community and campus involvement, with the overall benefit of increasing student connections to VCU.

RV’s provide a built-in academic and social support system, promote significant interaction among fellow residents, faculty and staff and help students form lasting friendships, great memories and a sense of community within their residence halls on campus.
