Living Learning Program

The Office of Pre-Health Sciences Advising offers a Living Learning Program for first-year students who are pursuing majors and/or concentrations in the pre-health areas. The program is housed on the second floor of Brandt Residence Hall and lasts through the fall and spring semesters of the freshman year at VCU.

Because on-campus housing is not guaranteed to sophomores and above, students wishing to live together during their sophomore year can make arrangements if they choose. In the past, program participants have worked within their peer group to make these arrangements.

Student participants in the Living Learning Program participate in the following activities:

  1. Live in Brandt Residence Hall the fall and spring semesters of their freshman year. Specific information about Brandt Residence Hall is available on the Residence Life and Housing Web site.

  2. Register for a learning community during his/her orientation program. A learning community is a set of common courses the living learning participants take together. Student participants in the program take the same sections of Focused Inquiry, Introduction to the University (UNIV 101 and UNIV 151), Introduction to Psychology (PSYC 101) and *Introduction to Biology (BIOL 151). A description of the courses is available on the Records and Registration Web site.

*Note: students must place into BIOL 151 to take this course. This requires placement into MATH 151 and CHEM 101

  1. Attend four study groups and three individual tutoring sessions in the fall and spring semesters. Students will have access to a tutor who lives in the residence hall with the participants. Study groups and tutoring will be coordinated by this staff person.

  2. Students are given the option to take courses together during the spring semester of their freshman year but it is not mandatory that they do so.

Participants in the Living Learning Program are selected by the Office of Health Career Education and Special Services for Students to participate in the VCU Acceleration Program.

Those interested in the Living Learning Program should apply to the VCU Acceleration Program. Students selected for the Living Learning Program will participate in the same orientation program.
