Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a peer-assisted study session. Created at the University of Missouri – Kansas City, SI was designed to assist students in courses that had proven to be difficult. SI leaders are students who have previously taken the courses, and who attend the current class, take notes, read the text and conduct three SI sessions each week. These sessions are open to all students in the class.

Do I have to enroll in Supplemental Instruction?

No, attendance is voluntary. The weekly sessions are open to anyone enrolled in the course. Attend the sessions that fit your schedule.

 

How much does Supplemental Instruction cost?

SI is free. Just show up at the sessions with your text and notes, and sign your name on the sign-in sheet.

 

What if I don’t have time to go to sessions?

SI actually saves you time. Students say that one hour of guided study time with an experienced leader is equal to two to three hours of trying to “get it” on your own. Also, students get great study tips from the leader and each other.

 

Will it help my grades?

Students who attend sessions on a regular basis usually earn a half to whole letter grade higher than students who do not attend SI sessions. And those who attend have a better understanding of the course content.
