The purpose of undergraduate tutoring is to create a peer-tutoring program for full-time students who may be having academic difficulty. Tutors are trained in tutoring and teaching techniques to best meet the needs of the tutee.

 

All learning center tutors are required to complete 10 hours of tutor training each semester. Tutors are trained in accordance with College Reading and Learning Association guidelines. CRLA is an international organization that certifies tutoring programs around the world.

 

Level I training

Level I tutor training focuses on educating new tutors about policies and procedures, ways to effectively communicate and plan sessions and the best methods for different types of tutoring. Below is a list of the training sessions for Level I.

Level I tutor training includes the following sessions:

  •  Accountability
   •  Communication skills
   •  Ethics of tutoring
   •  Goal setting and session planning
   •  Introduction to tutoring
   •  Policies and procedures
   •  The tutoring cycle
   •  Tutoring for finals
   •  Tutoring strategies
   •  VCU campus resources

 

Level II

Level II tutor training is a more detailed training, focusing on visual aids, developing and using probing questions, what to expect with the students and how to address learning disabilities.

Level II tutor training includes the following sessions:

  •  Characteristics of adult learners
   •  Content area tutoring (two parts)
   •  Cultural awareness
   •  Group tutoring strategies
   •  Identifying learning styles
   •  Learning disabilities
   •  Review of Level I
   •  Use of probing questions
   •  Using visual aids
