Athlete code of ethics

As a student-athlete at Virginia Commonwealth University, you have the opportunity to develop your academic, athletic and personal abilities in a community environment. In addition, athletics gives you an opportunity to travel, represent your institution and learn the importance of teamwork. Representing your team and the university requires a commitment to certain ethical guidelines and behaviors. Such ethics include but are not limited to:

1. Value one's personal integrity.
2. Respect different points of view.
3. Strive for the highest degree of excellence.
4. Abide by the spirit of the rules.
5. Treat all others with respect and courtesy.
6. Respect and accept the decisions of the coach.
7. Exhibit dignity in manner and dress when representing one's institution at all times.
8. Respect the accomplishments of teammates.
9. Exert maximum efforts in academics, practice and competition.

 

Coaches' jurisdiction and team rules
The coach is responsible for the total conduct of his/her sport program within limits of authority defined by the:

1. Philosophy and goals of the Athletic Department,
2. University and Athletic Department policies and procedures, and
3. Rules and regulations of the Colonial Athletic Association and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

 

Academic expectations agreement

In order to ensure athletic eligibility, remain in good standing with Virginia Commonwealth University and receive continuing support from our staff, student-athletes should adhere to the following expectations:

1. Student-athletes are expected to maintain contact with their assigned student-athlete adviser either through regularly scheduled meetings or when they have an academic concern.
2. When requesting a tutor student-athletes are expected to follow the outlined procedures for obtaining a tutor, and meet with their tutor at the regularly assigned time.
3. If assigned to study hall, student-athletes are expected to complete all required hours unless excused by their head coach, and are expected to utilize study hall time in a responsible manner.
4. Aside from absences due to competition, student-athletes are expected to attend all lectures, discussions and labs.
5. Student-athletes are expected to make appropriate arrangements with instructors to make up missed tests and other assignments due to athletic travel and prior to leaving.
6. Student-athletes are expected to seek out their instructors for extra help when necessary.
7. The NCAA mandates student-athletes must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits at all times during the fall and spring semesters.
8. The NCAA also requires student-athletes earn a minimum of 24 credits per year, with a maximum of six credits to be earned during the summer term.
9. Student-athletes are expected to maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA at all times.

 

Going to class, completing assignments and a proactive approach are the ingredients for a successful college experience.
