Transportation

Types of Transportation

Drive a car
This requires a driver’s license and access to a car.
Share a ride
Ridesharing saves you time, money and commuter stress. Carpooling, vanpooling, walking, riding your bike and riding GRTC or Petersburg Area Transit (PAT) service is not only good for our air quality and improving mobility throughout the region, but also helps save money. Carpooling is designed to accommodate individual lifestyles. There are many options such as short or long term pooling, 2 or 3 days a week, and ridematch possibilities. RideFinders can also help form a vanpool by bringing together at least seven (7) people to share the ride and commuting costs to and from work. For additional information about RideFinders visit the RideFinders Website or call (804) 643-RIDE.
Walk or Ride a Bicycle
Richmond's urban commuters who want to bike or walk to work have bike-friendly public transit and a growing system of bike paths, sidewalks, and trails available to them. Once you've decided on your route, make a weekend test to uncover any problems and see how much time to allow. Carry the same amount of clothes and other items that you would on a workday. Check to see if you're comfortable with the hills, intersections, and traffic you'll encounter. If not, explore alternatives. Imagine traffic conditions during regular commute hours, and remember that your route will look different after dark.
Ride the bus
GRTC bus service is available on fixed routes. View information on the GRTC website or call Customer Service at (804) 358-GRTC (4782). Customer Service hours are M-F 6:30 am to 7 pm Sat-Sun 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
CARE! The Community Assisted Ride Enterprise
CARE is a specialized public transportation alternative available for disabled persons who are unable to use the fixed-route buses. This program provides advance reservation, curb-to-curb paratransit service for qualified persons in the City of Richmond and Henrico County.
C-VAN The Central Virginia Area Network System
Through C-VAN, GRTC Transit System is helping the Department of Social Services remove transportation as a barrier to employment. C-VAN provides transportation assistance for Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare (VIEW) participants. Transportation options include curb-to-curb service through public transit and shared-ride services to work and daycare facilities. All VIEW participants must be referred to C-VAN by their local Department of Social Services.
