The Virginia Commonwealth University SportsCenter has announced the launching of its children’s book, Rodney Ram Teaches Teamwork. The launch took place on Tuesday, October 16 at 9 a.m. at G.W. Carver Elementary School in downtown Richmond. The event featured a book reading from VCU men’s basketball head coach Anthony Grant along with an appearance by mascot Rodney Ram.
The book initiative was developed over a five-year span under the direction of VCU SportsCenter Executive Director Dr. Richard L. Sander. The project was designed to teach life skills to area youth and was written by VCU SportsCenter graduate Stephanie H. McNamara and illustrated by former VCU women’s basketball player and VCU SportsCenter graduate Susie Fife.
“Improving literacy among our children is just one of the goals of this project,” said Sander. We strongly believe that a few of the core values taught in this book like teamwork, leadership and hard work are essential to a successful team, and more importantly, a successful life.”
Two third grade classes from G.W. Carver Elementary attended the launch. The VCU SportsCenter donated books to the program and the students had the opportunity to take pictures with and receive autographs from Coach Grant and Rodney Ram.
“This book is a great lesson in teamwork. One of our main goals at VCU is to play as a team. To be successful, we have to play unselfishly, together and with great energy,” added Grant.
The book, which costs $13.95, is currently on sale and can be purchased online at www.vcu.edu/sportscenter or by calling Kelly Kolker at (804) 827-5148.
