THE JOURNEY IS A JOURNEY IN ITSELF
5-22-07

The other day, I was forwarded an email that one of our administrators had received after the event The Journey: On the Field and Beyond which took place on April 22, 2007. The email read:

"Great program last night. I wish you could 'take it on the road.' I work at Meadowbrook High School and I think all students need to have it reinforced from 'elite athletes' the importance of education. We went home INSPIRED and so did our son.”

Over 500 people from around the community came together at the Stuart C. Siegel Center to come listen to top collegiate and professional athletes and coaches talk about how they have come to be regarded as some of the most well known and most well respected individuals in the sports world. The Journey: On the Field and Beyond was an event bringing together top college and professional athletes to discuss their journeys of individual success and the paths they took to get there. Brian Curtis, the moderator from CSTV did a great job leading the discussion and each panelist from star quarterback Jason Campbell to stand out VCU basketball player Calvin Roland gave great insight and advice to the hundreds of young athletes that attended the event.

Topics like how to set realistic goals, parental involvement in athletics, and what it takes to really be a good leader were among the main discussion points of the evening. The panelists spoke about their individual experiences and were very interactive with each other and their fans. They relayed positive messages to not only young student-athletes but to their families as well about leadership, teamwork, character and discipline.  At one point in the show, a young man asked “How to become a good leader?” and Coach Anthony Grant gave a very simple but strong answer that really speaks to the type of person Coach Grant is and what he values. He said, “Serve. In order to learn how to lead, you must first learn how to serve.” This was one of the overarching themes of this event and I think many people walked away feeling not only motivated, but inspired as well.

“It’s not the destination that counts, but the JOURNEY along the way.
