Resume Checklist
To gain interviews, you will want to create a resume that markets you well to
employers. University Career Center has print and video resources, individual
assistance, resume samples to help you with this important step in your job
search, and advisers to critique your resume during scheduled appointments.
Here's a check list for your self-evaluation.
Address
___ My name is larger than the rest of the text.
___ I have spelled out all the words in the address (except state).
___ If I will be moving soon, I have included a local and a permanent address.
Objective/Education
___ My objective clearly and concisely states the type of job
(and perhaps industry) for which I am applying.
___ Under education, I have listed university, degree,
major, graduation date and GPA (if above a 3.0).
___ I have included all colleges that I have attended for more than one year.
___ I have spelled out words such as "Bachelor of Arts"
rather than used abbreviations.
Experience
___ My experience includes organization name, job title and dates of employment.
___ I have quantified my experiences wherever possible.
___ Each statement begins with a strong action verb + details + result. Examples:
- - Entered data (too brief)
- + Entered sales data into Microsoft Excel in preparation for annual report
- - Trained employees (too brief)
- + Trained 10 employees on opening/closing procedures and monitored their progress
Overall Appearance
___ The headings stand out from the text, making items easy to find.
___ At arm's length, the text and white space appear balanced.
___ Margins are appropriate to make things fit well on the page.
___ Overall, my resume looks visually appealing.
___ I have used bold and italics to make important items stand out.
Details
___ My resume has been kept to one page.
___ I have kept my main text front between 10 points and 12 points.
___ My resume is printed on resume quality paper.
___ There are absolutely no errors on my resume.
___ My resume is tailored to the specific job for which I am applying.
___ The most important items are toward the top of the page.
___ I have omitted personal pronouns such as "I" and "my."
