Part-Time Employment as Career Exploration

Students choose to work part-time for a variety of reasons — need for income, out of interest, to develop new skills, to learn about a new environment, to be around interesting people, etc. Visit CareerConnections for part-time job listings.

Don't forget that the time spent in part-time employment can double as investigation and research into a possible future career or job interest. If possible (and many times it is), attempt to choose a job or a work environment that will teach you something new about a profession, an industry, or yourself. Once you are working on the job, look for opportunities to try something new. Discuss your progress and interest in new assignments and tasks with your supervisor.

You'll see different numbers of jobs each day since new listings are added daily as employers contact the Career Center with their openings (and as the Center deletes those that have been filled). The types of jobs will range from clerical worker to lab assistant to computer-related position in a department on either VCU campus, as well as many other types of jobs. Off-campus, the range of job titles is even wider. You can choose from employers located throughout Richmond metro area and from a wide assortment of schedules.

The Career Center will advise you on completing your application, how to approach employers, how to interview, and how to evaluate your options. Drop by the Career Center to meet a coordinator who can advise you.
