Career Development Exercises

The following exercises and assessments are offered by the Career Center to help students identify interests, values and skills in order to make a career choice. The options are not listed in a particular order. To choose one or more of the following assessments, we recommend that you discuss the options with a Career Center Coordinator.

DISCOVER

DISCOVER is a web-based assessment tool that can help students collect and evaluate the information needed to decide on a major, or choose a career path based on their interests, values and skills.

Students can also find in-depth information about occupations, graduate schools, scholarships and the job search process.

Students do need to visit the Career Center to be issued a user name and pass code.

There is no charge for this assessment.

Values Card Sort

Values self-assessment -- learning about work values using a card sort exercise (helpful for the student who has identified interests and a possible career goal but has not prioritized work values and examined them in relation to career decision-making).

The Values Card Sort is a set of cards representing work values that you sort and prioritize to gain a better understanding of your requirements from a job or a career. You can request this in a Career Counseling appointment and work on it with the coordinator.

There is no charge for this exercise.

Self-Directed Search (SDS)

Self-assessment -- learning more about your interests from a pencil and paper inventory (helpful for the student who is unsure of his/her future career and would be interested in taking an instrument that can be used individually or reviewed by a career counselor in an individualized session).

The Self-Directed Search is an instrument that identifies interests as they relate to occupations. You may request this in a counseling appointment. It is helpful to discuss your SDS results and next steps with a Career Center coordinator.

There is a $ 5.00 fee for this service.

Strong Interest Inventory (SII)

Self-assessment -- learning about your interests and leadership style from a pencil-and-paper inventory (helpful for the student who is unsure of his/her future career and would be interested in taking an instrument to be reviewed by a Career Center coordinator in an individualized session).

The Strong Interest Inventory is an assessment that compares individuals' interests to those of people in given occupations, lists occupations of similar interest and identifies leadership style. You may request this in a counseling session.

You should schedule an appointment to meet with a Career Center coordinator approximately 10 days after taking the SII to get feedback and discuss your next steps.

There is a $10 fee for this service.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)

Self-assessment -- learning about your personality type and its relationship to making a career decision (helpful for the student who is unsure of his/her future career and would be interested in taking an instrument to be scored and reviewed by a Career Center coordinator in an individualized session).

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a personality inventory that gives information on how individuals take in and process information, make decisions, and relate to others. You may request this in a counseling session or during drop in hours. You should schedule an appointment to meet with a Career Center coordinator approximately 10 days after taking the MBTI to get feedback and discuss your next steps.

There is a $ 15 fee for this service.
