The VCU Rice Center is evolving. The first structure on site — the Research Pier — was completed in 2006. The Walter L. Rice Education Building was dedicated in 2008 and certified in March 2009 as the first platinum-level LEED building in the Commonwealth of Virginia. And plans for a state-of-the-science research building and overnight lodging for visiting scientists are underway.
The center's facilities and infrastructure support an array of resarch and educational activities. Along with the laboratory and classroom space, and boat access to the James River, the infrastructure provides continuous water-quality and meteorological-monitoring equipment and wireless connectivity throughout the center.
