Odonatathon, August 2005
The first Progressive Odonatathon for Charles City County, (hosted by the Rice Center) was held on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005. Dragonflies and damselflies as a group comprise the insect order Odonata (the “toothed ones”) and are collectively known as odonates. The object of the Odonatathon was to identify as many different species of dragonflies and damselflies as possible at five different locations: VCU Rice Center, Harrison Lake Fish Hatchery, Berkeley Plantation, Sherwood Forest and Daring Point.
We had 19 participants who collected a total of 25 species at five different locations [PDF]. The weather was less than optimal — cool, windy and cloudy — so the results weren’t what we hoped for, but a great time was had by all.
