JRA Riverkeeper wins 2012 Friends of the Rice Center award

Chuck Frederikson of Hopewell, Va. was this year’s recipient of the Friends of the Rice Center Award, presented at the Rice Center Annual Cooperators Meeting. The award recognizes the important contributions to the teaching and research mission of the Rice Center made by individuals who are not formally associated with the center. Chuck, who has recently retired from his position as Riverkeeper for the James River Association, has assisted with numerous research projects conducted by VCU faculty affiliated with the Rice Center. Thanks in part to Chuck’s efforts, these have substantially advanced our understanding of sturgeon and their migration patterns in the James as well as water quality issues arising from the occurrence of harmful algal blooms. Chuck is continuing to assist Dr. Bukaveckas and Ph.D. student Joe Wood this summer with a study of wedge clams and their role in controlling blooms by filtering algae. In the process, Chuck has established a new personal best, and possibly a world record (unconfirmed) for the largest wedge clam ever collected (over 10 cm)!
