Q. Does the State Automobile Insurance
Program cover my personal automobile while being used on VCU business?
A. No. Your personal automobile
insurance policy would be responsible for coverage.
Q. May a non-employee drive a state vehicle?
A. Yes, BUT, only in a situation where there is no alternative. The
non-employee driver must be acting with the permission of an employee and meet the
requirements of the VCU Vehicle Safety Program.
Q. What is my department’s financial responsibility in
the event of loss or damage to a state vehicle?
A. The department that owns or operates the vehicle is responsible for
the collision and
comprehensive deductible of $1,000 per occurrence.
Q. What is my department’s financial responsibility in
the event of a property loss?
A. The department or school is responsible for the first $25,000 of
each loss.
Q. Is my personal property covered by the State Insurance
Plan?
A. No. Coverage for loss or damage to personal property is the
responsibility of the
individual. Coverage can usually be found under a homeowner’s
policy.
Q. Are state employees bonded?
A. Yes, but only those required by state law to be bonded.
Q. Are students covered by the State Liability and Medical
Malpractice Insurance
Programs?
A. Yes, all students are covered from the first day of class as long
as they are acting
under the direction of the University and within the scope of their
University
assignment.
Q. Who should be contacted in the event of a loss or
claim?
A. Contact the VCU Risk Management Office at (804) 828-7531 (phone) or
(804) 828-8510 (fax). If you are involved in an accident while driving
a state vehicle, you must call the State Police or the VCU Police (828-1234) if the accident is
on campus.
