- The National Alliance for Mental Health, Voices for Virginia’s
Children, Mental Health America of Virginia, Virginia Federation
of Families, Psychiatric Society of Virginia, and the Virginia
Association of Community Service Boards honor experts in
the field of mental health each year. In the Fall of 2008,
three of the seven honorees who were selected, were from
the Department of Psychiatry at VCUHS.
Robert Cohen, PhD, Brian Meyer, PhD, Aradhana
Bela Sood, MD, were chosen for their dedication
and leadership by these organizations who come together
to showcase the finest mental health care advocates in the
Commonwealth. Our three doctors were nominated by peers
and celebrated for their steadfast fight for advocacy, research,
education and patient care in mental health.
“This is a well-deserved honor for Drs. Cohen, Sood
and Meyer. Three of the seven awards in the state going
to VCU psychiatry physicians show what dedicated and distinguished
individuals we have on our team. Our department is driven
by a commitment to advocating for children," said Joel
Silverman, M.D., chair of the Department of Psychiatry.

- President Eugene P. Trani and Provost and Vice President
for Academic Affairs Stephen D. Gottfredson recognized Mary
Ellen Olbrisch, PhD for her outstanding accomplishments
in the areas of teaching, scholarship, service and overall
excellence and honored her with the Distinguished Faculty
Award at the formal opening of the academic year in 2008.
Throughout her career and specifically in her 23 years at
the Department of Psychiatry, at VCUHS, Olbrisch has maintained
a tradition of service that has carried over to her roles
as a clinical health psychology educator and practitioner.
Dr. Olbrisch specializes in obesity and weight loss surgery,
living organ donors, and post traumatic stress disorders.

Susan G. Kornstein, MD was featured in Brown
Medical School's Magazine in the feature "Eye on Alumni".

- Susan G. Kornstein, MD has been chosen
by Jewish Women International as a 2008 Women to Watch honoree
for her work as a pioneer in women’s health. Kornstein,
a professor of psychiatry and obstetrics/gynecology in the
Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, is
one of 10 women nationwide to receive the JWI’s national
leadership award this year. MORE
- Kenneth Kendler, PhD - VCU part of international
research team awarded Wellcome Trust Foundation grant to
study molecular genetics of depression. MORE
- Aradhana Bela Sood, MD, MSHA received
one of the Women in Science, Dentistry and Medicine (WISDM)
Professional Achievement Award for their special contributions,
dedication, leadership, mentorship and accomplishments in
the schools of Medicine and Dentistry. We are thrilled to
have one of our own receive this University honor. Dr. Sood
is the Chair of the Department’s Division of Child
and Adolescent Psychiatry and was recently honored as one
of the three women who received this Distinguished Award
for 2007.
- Susan Williams White, PhD has been awarded
a five-year career award to develop expertise in treating
children with high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders
from the NIMH. She will design an evidence-based cognitive
behavioral therapy that aims to help these children overcome
anxiety and develop better social skills. Once an initial
version of the therapy is developed, Dr. White intends to
test it in a clinical trial.
- Susan Kornstein, MD is a professor in
Psychiatry at VCU and Executive Director of the Mood Disorders
Clinic. She was a keynote speaker at the Third International
Congress on Women’s Mental Health in Melbourne, Australia.
This conference was held in March of 2008, and explored
the psychosocial, economic and cultural contexts of women’s
mental health as well as the genetic, cellular, neural,
hormonal, pharmacologic and other basic science aspects
of women’s mental health.
